Contact Lens Courses - Getting Started

What will I learn on this course?

'Getting Started' has been designed to guide & support students in preparation for contact lens certificate practical examinations.

The programme will include:

1. Revision Lectures:
  • Instrumentation
  • RGP & soft lens fitting
  • Aftercare consultations
  • Management of common aftercare issues.

2. Practical Hands-On Sessions:
  • Slit-lamp examinations
  • RGP fitting
  • Soft lens fitting
  • Over-refraction.

3. Tutorial Sessions:
  • The legal implications
  • How to plan the time until the exam
  • Case record preparation
  • The Practical examination.

NB: 'Getting Started' is NOT a pre-exam revision course for those sitting practical examinations this year Ė it is a preparation course for students planning to sit their practical exams at the summer or winter sessions NEXT year. Who is this course for?

Getting Started is for students who have completed the Contact Lens Certificate Course with ABDO College, taken their theory exams and are ready to start working towards practical exams next year. It is to help you know where to get started, what to do next and to advise you of the legal and examination requirements.

Do I have to be working in practice?

Although not an essential course requirement, it is preferable that you are gaining practical experience (under supervision) to support your learning and developing practical skills in contact lens practice.

What qualifications do I need to attend the Getting Started course?

Applicants will normally have sat their contact lens certificate theory examinations with the ABDO.

What should I do if I donít have these qualifications?

If you are unsure about your suitability to attend Getting Started call us and we will be happy to discuss your options with you.

Do I have to be a member of ABDO?

Yes, you will need to retain full membership for the duration of your course.

Do I have to register with the General Optical Council?

Yes, it is essential that you retain full membership as a practicing Dispensing Optician for the duration of your course.

ABDO College provides the Association of British Dispensing Opticians' three-year distance learning course for trainee dispensing opticians. This incorporates four-weeks of compulsory college attendance giving students an opportunity to consolidate their theoretical studies with practical laboratory sessions, tutorials and lectures.
